Mrs. Marsha Chotiner
Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

There is so much happening in the Media Center we can hardly catch our breath.

Our first school-wide "Get Caught Reading" Bookmark Contest was a huge success. We had many entries and we were thrilled when Mr. Chris Forehan, District Assistant Superintendent, judged the contest. Our winners were 6th Grader Hosiriis Zapata, 7th Grader Natalie Alonzo and 8th Grader Haitanna Perez. These students received gift cards from Barnes and Noble, Certificates and a gift from The Pearson Foundation.

The Million Word Challenge is going strong and our students continue to log the books they have read since we joined the challenge in December. All of our students who are taking part in this challenge are surprised to see how many books they have actually read. Our winners will be announced in April.

The 2010 Winter Olympics has invaded the Media Center and we have caught "Olympic Fever." Each day a question is asked about the Olympics. I have received pins and stickers from the USA Olympic Committee and Olympic pins from Von's Market; these will be given out to the participants. It has been a thrill to see how our students have become interested in the Olympics.

Last but not least, we will host our 2nd Annual Bookfair at Barnes and Noble Bookstore in the Long Beach Town Center, on Wednesday, March 17th from 9:00a.m until 11:00p.m. Mrs. Baker will host "Reader's Theatre, Mrs. McDonough and Miss Dunphy will host an Art Exhibit and Mr. Fericean will provide music for the evening. We will receive a percentage of sales from 9a.m. until 11p.m on everything in the store except gift cards. Please look for the flyer your student will be bringing home next week. We hope you will support this event so we can purchase books for the library.

As always, I encourage families to make reading a priority. Twenty minutes an evening should be spent reading. Read the newspaper with your child, a magazine, or just share quiet time with your child and read a novel. If you read, I am sure your child will read too!

Thank you for your continued support.
